XP vs Vista

I’m amazed at just how soon we forget. I remember not two years ago everyone complaining about the security flaws and instability of XP. Just 7 short years ago people were just getting into hating XP. Do you remember the lines? All the security is going to mess it up, it takes way to much resources, the interface is ugly! Today It seems to be much more popular to sing it’s praises and fight the discontinuation date by buying pc’s as quickly as you can while you can “still” get xp before the june 30th date.

Being in the techinical services field I generally have to be an early adopter when it comes to anything the average small business is going to get into so I’ve been running vista since release candidates. I’ve been very impressed the whole way. I now use it daily on my Asus Laptop (2ghz turion, 1 gb memory, nvidia graphics) and my desktop (p4 2.6, 1gb memory, ATI Radeon 8000 pro). I haven’t had one complaint and have had nothing but stable performance since day one. So why do the masses hate it?

  1. People in general hate change. The number one complaint I hear is I can’t find what I’m looking for. This took me all of two days MAX to overcome. Come on people this OS is going to be everywhere for the next 5 years. Just learn it!
  2. Many manufacturers rushed inadequate machines to market just to get those early sales when people were excited about a new OS. The machines best buy were selling just barely met the minimum specs. Just take a look at Xp’s minimum specs. Compare them to your system specs… yeah.
  3. Vista is the natural progression of things. The OS itself is much more secure than xp ever will be unless you have about 3-4 third party programs protecting you. It’s much more user friendly and no the pop ups aren’t nearly as bad as apple wants you to think. As a tech person I’m glad they are there so my less tech savvy customers and friends are less likely to break things on accident.

So all I’m saying is Vista isn’t the evil looming giant some seem to think and in just a few short years any problems you might have had will be a distant memory and the masses will again be upset about the newest Microsoft offering… it’s the circle of life!

Iraq DownedI was talking with Trever in the office the other day about how much the war was costing the U.S. I made the comment that it isn’t really all that bad yet even with our $4/gallon gas compared to World War II when they had all kinds of rations and scrap drives to help the war effort. Which brought up the question just how much Iraq is costing in comparison to other wars in recent history.

War Year of dollar figures Cost
U.S. Nuclear Program 2005 $5.8 Trillion
World War II 2003 $4.7 trillion
Vietnam 2005 $623 billion
WWI 2005 $613 Billion
Iraq War – As of March 2008 2008 $501 billion

When you look at it in comparision we still have a extremely long way to go till Iraq is even close to World War 2. There is at least another year before we catch up to even World War 1 (aka the war to end all wars) with Iraq currently costing 2 billion a week.

I like this article I found on msnbc the other day. I always knew it was true! I remember getting the old “you have to be an example” speach. I always figured it was just my family though. I think parents tend to get tired of fighting and expect the younger siblings to act just like the oldest sibling.

I was talking to Trever today about music we liked from the 90’s and I mention how much I liked The Offspring and wish they hadn’t broken up. Well I decided to check and see if they were up to anything now and guess what I find out! Apparently they didn’t break up and they are releasing a new cd next month!! this is their first cd in 5 years. How awesome is that?? Well I can tell you right now, inconceivably awesome. These guys have always been one of my favorite bands. I included the flash widget below so you can listen to the new single or click the download link to get a link sent to you inbox.

I checked my google analytics page the other day and to my surprise I had no traffic for the past couple weeks! After thinking about this little problem for a minute I realized the time traffic had dropped off was when I installed the new wordpress updates there by replacing the index.php I had edited to include the analytics code….

For those looking to install analytics please install it at the end of your footer.php for your theme or you’ll probably end up reinstalling it again a few months down the road!

I laughed for a good 30 seconds after reading this one. For some reason Davonne didn’t enjoy it as much as me. This ones a classic.

The Slip

I picked up on this when I stopped by creative commons yesterday so I figured I post up my own review. So far The Slip isn’t bad at all but I don’t have much interest in Ghosts. The Slip is pretty normal NIN stuff, the stuff I like, you can find a full breakdown on synthtopia. Ghosts is completely instrumental and while it might make great background music isn’t something I’ll be playing again.

I want to personally thank everyone thats celebrating Cinco De Mayo today. Its a holiday that really means alot to me. To see all the local Mexican restaurants celebrating with me is heart warming.

Of course I’m taking about the day just 3 short years ago today (5/5/05) that I started High Performance Computer Services. I’m fairly surprised that I’ve been able to reach national holiday status already but it really is appreciated.

Over at one of my favorite sites wikipedia.org they describe Cinco De Mayo as:

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “5th of May”) is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla. It is not an obligatory federal holiday.[1][2][3][4][5] The holiday commemorates an initial victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

They dress it up a bit, misspell my name a little (nathan – ignacio..), I’m not really mexican I just tan easily, and the dates off by a few years, but whatever the general gist of it’s there… somewhere.

When I think of Plymouth Rock I think of this:

\

But apparently this is what you get if you visit Plymouth rock…

Plymouth Rock

For more exciting Plymouth Rock information click here. Seriously though, When you think of Plymouth rock you think of a rock way more awesome than that. Seriously if I was William Bradford I would have been thinking “we can’t land here, we need a rock with awesome written all over it!” I’m not sure were he would have found that rock but man I’m sure he could have come up with something more awesome than that!
